We are so excited to see our students compete at the tournament tomorrow! It's at St. Marks High School which is only about 30 minutes from ATA Elkton. Competition always makes students stronger if they react to the outcome of the tournament correctly. This is THE BEST opportunity to teach students how to be a good winner and how to be a good loser.
First off, make sure that you teach this to your child before they win or lose. Teach them tonight, while eating breakfast tomorrow, or on the way to the tournament. Depending on the outcome of the tournament, your child (or you) will be in a different state of mind that may not absorb the lesson powerfully, so go over the lesson before the tournament.
Be a good winner: #1 thing is to not a be a bully. A good winner always congratulates their opponents and tells them that they did a good job. When your child wins, make sure they become a top motivator and helps to encourage their fellow competitors to try again next time!
Be a good loser: Most people complain when they lose - The judges stunk, the other kid didn't get that point, they didn't like me. That's a normal human response to things not going our way. What we need to do is take over that emotion that sounds like "I should have won" and turn it into "you guys really did good!" I was well known at tournaments not because I always won, but because I made it a point to meet all of my competitors and cheer them on. Then, if I did lose, the respect I got from motivating them gave me life-long friends.
To bounce back and be driven after a loss is what fuels the most successful people in the world. Let's be driven and use this tournament as a way to teach our kids how to be successful in life!
The last chance to register will be at the door tomorrow. Usually, the line is pretty long so it's best to register here at ATA Elkton. You can do that anytime tonight up until about 9pm. Also, make sure that you have YOUR copy of the registration form! You can come by and pick that up if you haven't done it already. The address for the tournament is
St. Mark's High School
2501 Pike Creek Rd
Wilmington, DE 19808
As you may know, our school is CLOSED tomorrow to support the tournament. I hope to see you there but, if not, we'll catch up next week. If you are competing, bring in your trophy to show off and get a "show and tell" during class and a RED STAR for your VICTORY PATCH!!
